My students need graphic novels related to our unit on the founding of the American colonies. We use the graphic novels to bridge language issues and to ensure that all students' needs are met.

My Students
I am a seventh-grade social studies teacher for an inner-city school. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, some are refugees and some have been in this city for generations. We have 100% free and reduced lunches for our students.
Both my students and I walk in every day ready to meet the challenges that we both throw at each other.
They begin each day with their own challenges and baggage. Did they get breakfast? Did their siblings eat and make it to school on time? This is where we meet at 8 o'clock each weekday morning. We then must work through all of this and begin our attempts at learning. My goal every day, is for us to have a place where the students can leave their baggage at the door and learn something new from each other.
I try to include chances for us to be creative, to break up long days of sitting quietly with projects and interactive elements. Each day is a brand-new experience, and an opportunity for all of us to learn from each other.
My Project
I teach a class of students who come from across the world. We use graphic novels as a way of bridging our language barriers since pictures can break through any language.
These novels will be used to explain the foundations of the American Colonies.
In this way, we can receive the same information through a mix of words and pictures. We learn about the Mayflower, Roanoke, and Jamestown in this unit. Having a novel to enhance our understanding would be beneficial to my students. Finally, since it is a novel with storytelling images I am able to ensure that even my lowest level readers are able to read along with the class.
