My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, some are refugees and some have been in this city for generations. All of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Both my students and I walk in every day ready to meet the challenges that we both throw at each other. They begin each day with their own challenges and baggage. Did they get breakfast? Did their siblings eat and make it to school on time? This is where we meet at 8 o'clock each weekday morning. We then must work through all of this and begin our attempts at learning. My goal every day is for us to have a place where the students can leave their baggage at the door and learn something new from each other. I try to include chances for us to be creative, to break up long days of sitting quietly with projects and interactive elements. Each day is a brand-new experience, and an opportunity for all of us to learn from each other.
