Graphic Novel Lit Circles Make the Reading World go Round!

My students need books that get them interested in reading. These graphic novels are high-interest reading materials that have gotten middle school students reading again. Each book listed are high on the request list.

My Students

My class is a Reading/Language Arts classroom. I have 6th-8th-grade students in my class. Many of my students are students who are interested in books but find the longer novels a little difficult to follow or stay focused on. They also struggle to read the higher level books because the vocabulary frustrates them.

The students in my reading class need to have access to a variety of reading materials and resources.

They tend to be the more active students, so I try to incorporate movement and grouping to help keep their focus on the reading. My students become more engaged by being active while learning. My students want to learn in dynamic and interesting ways! My classroom allows students to learn at their own pace, at their own level. My class is differentiated by the way the students learn and how they interact with the curriculum. Students in my classroom are asked to read a variety of texts including fiction and non-fiction, but they love to read graphic novels. Their favorite books tend to center around characters who are their age, no matter what the text type is. Making it interesting to them is a challenge I love.

My Project

Graphic novels are the key to our reluctant readers. These graphic novels will bridge the gap between picture books and full novels in my classroom. The year will start out with literature circles focused on the graphic novel of their own choosing. Students will have discussions using these graphic novels. Getting kids excited enough to talk about reading is one of my goals with this project.

Middle school students are trying to find where they fit in, and often times books help them to relate to what is going on in the world around them.

These graphic novels are highly sought after by our middle schoolers. I am excited that they are reading again!

The novels listed in this project have been requested by my current students as they help me plan for future classes. Help me to get books in the students' hands that THEY want to read!
