My Students

One of my favorite reading experiences is sharing my thoughts about a book with my friends. Book clubs give children the opportunity to explore critical thinking skills through small group discussions about a thought-provoking book.

My students and their families represent just about every culture and lifestyle you can imagine.

They are a testament to acceptance-one that would inspire any person. Our urban school focuses on the arts which are infused in all aspects of learning. Because our students express themselves through a variety of approaches, all students find amazing ways to succeed in their learning.

My Project

Book Clubs are a wonderful way to share a learning experience. Persepolis is a book that engages our teen readers with not only a memoir that takes place partly during the war between Iran and Iraq but also a coming of age story of a young girl. Students do their best work when they feel a connection with the story they are reading. Although the heroine has a much different life from that of an average New York teen, our students will see that we all share more similarities than we do differences. It is a wonderful way to build acceptance in any community.

As everyone knows--schools have no money to buy books.

The alternative is to ask students to take out the few that are in libraries (never enough available) or to buy their own. I'm a great supporter of our libraries but they also suffer from poor funding. Too often I have to ask already over-burdened parents to contribute to my classroom library. Please fund my project so I can keep the focus where it belongs--on the children and fulfilling learning experiences.
