My students need an assortment of graphic nonfiction books to read in class and to keep the book (a surprise for them at the end!) when we are finished reading in class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read and learn about history, they just haven't found the right materials yet! I want my students to experience that feeling of reading about a real person or historical event in a fun, creative format that you don't want to put down. Enter: graphic nonfiction!
My students are age 16-19 and attend a continuation high school.
That means that they are behind in credit, have not been successful at other schools, and many have attended at least one, but sometimes three other high schools. My students' skill levels vary; some are very high-performing, some are reading far below where they should. My classes include students who have learned English as a second language and students with learning disabilities. My students are very different individuals, but they all have in common their intelligence and their appreciation for a good educational resource that makes learning fun!
My Project
I want my students to experience the love of reading and of learning that comes from an excellent educational resource, such as the graphic nonfiction that I have selected here. I will provide a variety of high quality nonfiction graphic novels and let each student in two of my Modern World classes choose his or her own book to read.
There will be two students (one in each period) reading each book. We will dedicate class time to reading the books. At the end of each silent reading session, the student will write a note to the student in the other class period who is reading the same book. Thus, students can work on having a written dialogue with a peer about the text. They can ask each other questions, write reactions, and read what their peer thinks about the same text. Students will learn about the particular person or event that they have chosen, and they will learn about reading responses and written dialogue.
The best part of this assignment is that at the end of our unit, because we will not have had enough time to finish the books in class, I will surprise the students by letting each one keep the book that he or she was reading!
We literally can't do this without you! Your donation can help inspire a love of reading, of learning about history, and of having meaningful dialogues about these books. Each student will also get to keep a new, fascinating book, thanks to you!
