This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students have horrifying deficits in the English language. All of my students are American citizens, born and raised. They hate to read. Believe me, they say it all the time. Yet, as soon as I can put a piece of urban fiction into their hands, the pages start to turn!
Society would label them as "dumb" or "lazy", but I know better.
They are smart and spirited. They just lack strong vocabularies and background information. I am trying my hardest to share with them a love of reading, but our library and local bookstores lack necessary urban fiction!
My Project
These books contain the stories and details of classic, Greek Myths. The students will self-select the graphic novel they would like to read, and they will become part of a literature circle. Within the circle, they will practice discussing literature and writing effective summaries. We will also be able to to use these books to emulate story-writing and character development: the students will eventually try to create their own myth. The information obtained from these novels will greatly enhance their knowledge of the Greek Gods and Goddesses: they will get to experience Heracles' twelve labors or Athena turning Medusa into a gorgon. Students love these tales for their brains get to escape reality and get to go on magical adventures from times long ago.
