My Project

In STEM subjects learning a new vocabulary is necessary for a good understanding of the principles underlying the topic at hand. English Language Learners (ELLs) have an even harder time because of their limited proficiency in English which is used to provide "everyday" descriptions and examples.

We propose to obtain 4 translators that provide both voice and text translations to more fully include ELLs in STEM education.

These devices will be used in classrooms to facilitate the use of English for native speakers of Arabic, Creole (various forms), Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese (85 students). These students are having great difficulty understanding because even simple explanations in English are confusing. The advantage of the Pocketalk Plus is that it provides real-time translation (including text) that includes idioms and technical terms. We have been trialing a Pocketalk S device with several students and have found that it greatly aids with ELL understanding in Physical Science and Geometry.

Our proposal is to distribute the four devices to classes in Biology, Environmental Science, Physical Science, Geometry, and Algebra to the lowest performing ELLs. These are students that are having the hardest time learning English yet they are enrolled in classes in which they cannot succeed because their English comprehension has placed them behind. The plan is to remediate their first semester and improve their second semester by use of the Pocketalk Plus. We have already compared the Pocketalk S to phones using Microsoft Translate or Google Translate and found the Pocketalk to be superior, especially with text.

If these devices significantly improve ELL learning, we intend to seek more of these.
