My Project

The most common question I hear in music class from my Kindergarteners is, "When do WE get to play those?". We play mostly unpitched instruments in Kindergarten through Second Grade music. These are instruments like drums, egg shakers, and rhythm sticks. Resonator Bars are made specifically for young learners to have a hands experience learning pitch. They can be manipulated by separating the bars, you can physically see the vibrations made by the instrument, and they have a peaceful sound that can be enjoyed when played in a large class setting.

Resonator Bars would allow us to dive into the world of pitch and sound waves with scholars as young as Kindergarten!

For example, a kindergarten class using the resonator bars might look something like this...

We would begin by sharing ideas of what they think sound is, where sound comes from, and how our instruments vibrate to create the sound we hear.

We would then take turns tapping the various bars and describing what we hear. I would encourage them to describe if the bars sound low or high. We would experiment hitting the bars in a variety of ways to see if that changes the pitch. Harder, softer, different mallets, etc. We would then investigate if the lengths of the bars have anything to do with the pitch.

Our final experiment would involve them arranging the bars in different orders to control the pitch direction, and finally compare low/high pitches with pictures of their corresponding sound waves. We would conclude by discovering that the shortest bar has the shortest wavelength, etc.

We strive to teach a multitude of cross-curricular lessons within the Resource classroom, and your support helps make that happen!
