As a teacher in the WSFC school district, my students are faced with challenges every day; both in and out of the classroom. Regardless of the many challenges they face, I am looking to instill pride in their learning as well as thinking about their future as 21st-century citizens.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households. Our school, as a whole, is on free and reduced lunch based on the majority of our socioeconomic status.
These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academics.
My Project
The Wish Giver, by Bill Brittain, is a great book full of theme lessons, character development and perspective. My students would enjoy the different stories from the different perspective of the three main characters.
Reading chapter books with my students helps them to ask specific questions, to look for themes, and figure out how to determine vocabulary meanings within the text.
This book is full of phrases that students may not know the meaning to. This book does a great job in allowing students to determine the meaning of certain sayings using their context clues.
Students can also get a lot of figurative language, theme discussion, and vocabulary from the text.
It is my hope that students will gain a love for reading something along this genre and be able to apply what they've learned to other chapter books throughout the year.
