Help me give my students a classroom library in which they may have a wide selection of literary and informational books at their independent reading levels. We also are in need of shelves to store the books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have 20 super energetic second graders. As their teacher, I am challenged to find new, fun, and creative ways to get them involved and keep their interest. They live in a low income area, and many do not get incentives at home.
My students are to eager to learn things in which they are interested.
They love music, drawing, reading, and tampering with logic puzzles. Many of my students are reading below grade level; however, that does not stop them from volunteering and trying. My students fret when they do not have the opportunity to read aloud to the class. They love read aloud's from me as the teacher and they love to read with a partner.
My Project
The more contact children have with books, the better readers they become. The classroom library helps develop literacy. There are certain characteristics and design features that strongly influence whether or not classroom libraries may be used to their full potential to improve children’s reading performance: a large supply of books, a wide variety of books that vary in difficulty, a variety of genres, high quality books, and an attractive setting.
Children learn to read by reading.
My goal is to promote my student's involvement with reading not only by reading to them daily, but also by having them interact with books through the extensive use of the classroom library.
I am doing this by ordering more books to expand our library. I have ordered books that vary in difficulty from first grade to third and fourth grade levels. I have chosen a wide variety of genres from fables and folktales to chapter book series, and various informational text. Lastly, I am hoping with these new high quality books, and colorful shelves my students will find them and the classroom library attractive and be more eager to peruse through the books.
With these books to read and time to read them, I am hoping my students will get on the right road to reading achievement.
