Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Students are freshmen and sophomores who dream of one-day becoming health care professionals to serve those in need. When asked why they want to become a healthcare professional the most common response is, "I want to help others." Our Biomedical Science course is designed to give our students the opportunity to explore a variety of medical fields through the lens of case studies. These case studies are patients for whom they must keep a medical record as they navigate the possibilities of why they may be ill.

Our community is a border town where the majority of the community is of low socioeconomic status.

Many of our students are first-generation college-bound students. They dream of pursuing careers in the healthcare fields to help others so we begin that now in our small community. My students become involved in community projects to bring health care awareness to our community throughout the year. They work hard and compete in HOSA Future Health Professionals and have represented the state of Arizona at the International Conference for the past 5 years.

My Project

Public schools are struggling with funding, and when it comes to purchasing supplies, there is a hierarchy of which supplies are bought. I teach Biomedical Science, and as a science course, there are many supplies needed to conduct experiments in our class. These supplies take precedence over basic classroom supplies, and laboratory supplies are expensive and exhaust our budget.

Students need organization in the classroom to help eliminate distractions and gather materials quickly so they may focus on the learning.

This project includes a variety of items to help organize the materials station for my students and me. It is important that they learn good organizational skills for the future especially in areas such as the medical professions, where maintaining supplies organized and not wasting materials is important. First, there are different size containers with drawers which will house items such as construction paper, markers, pencils, pens, color pencils, expo markers, paper clips, staples, post-its and much more.

Secondly, a label maker and label tape, so that all drawers are labeled thus reducing the time opening drawers in search of needed materials. Lastly, board magnet strips and plickers. The magnet strips will help divide the board so that students can quickly see information for their daily tasks. Plickers are an affordable alternative technology to clickers which our school cannot afford.
