Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I joined the Patriots in 7th grade because I wanted to be part of a family. The hardest part of running is when you want to give up, but you don't. The Patriots gave me role models to look up to." This is a quote from one of our runners from a yearbook.
Many teams develop a culture all based on winning or losing, but we develop a culture based on hard work and taking on challenges to strengthen one mentally.
In our team's history, we have ran distances ranging from 1500m to even a half marathon! Many teams have tryouts, but we accept all students because no matter what size or level one is, they should still have access to the benefits and joy of running. We train in all sorts of weather, including the rain and snow to develop a strong mindset! We've completed tough challenges such as running five bridges in one day! Our runners treat one another like family members inside and outside of school. We have runners who graduated to high school but still return to help the team out!
My Project
Our team currently has access to 3 donated GPS watches to use for running. We are hoping for another GPS watch to use but this time one that has advanced functions, particularly mapping and elevation profile.
Two things that helps our runners improve immensely are awareness and self-reflection.
While running, more of our students will be aware of their current pace and total miles run since we'll have another GPS watch to use. They'll know if they need to speed up, slow down, or maintain their current pace. That is awareness. As for self-reflection, with the GPS watch, they can look back at the route that they ran. To them, it'll be interesting data and make them really reflect on how they did at certain parts of the course, especially when they use the watch for a race. In addition, the elevation profile after a run will show them how much hills they ran during a training session. Where we train is hilly and when they look at the elevation profile, I think it'll really hit them just how many uphill portions they ran to strengthen their leg muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
All in all, this GPS watch will not only offer the normal running stats but additional ones as well!
