My Students

My students live in a rural desert area of Southern California. We enjoy our morning sunrises and beautiful sunsets among the Joshua Trees. We are in a small town with many students coming from low income households. Our school is embracing a model of Social Emotional Learning in the classrooms that truly values the experience of each child. I have witnessed the impact this model has had on the growth, engagement, and confidence of the students. I seek opportunities to challenge students and myself.

We're always looking for ways to push the envelope and try new things.

My students are curious about the world around them and how everything works. As my students grow and mature, they will need more opportunities to define themselves as individuals and feel successful in their ventures. As an educator, I hope to make these moments frequent and meaningful.

My Project

Learning about of the 50 states is one of the most exciting times in the 5th grade year. Students become infatuated with the state they are assigned to research and want to gain all the knowledge they can. While students embrace becoming experts, I would like to add an additional element of excitement. This project aims to provide students the resources necessary to write letters to the governor of their selected state. After conducting some initial research, students will inquire about specific aspects of the state's culture, economics, entertainment, etc. Our goal is to use the envelopes, and stamps to send these letters off to the governors. I can only imagine the anticipation that will follow as students anxiously await a response.

We will discuss the format of formal letters and practice the skill addressing envelopes.

When a response is received, students will follow up with a formal thank you card to honor the time and dedication given by the governors.To wrap everything up, students will use all this new information to create travel brochures on the selected state. Students will incorporate a quote from the governor's letter to add significance to their brochure.

It is my hope that these interactions will lead to experiences that spark further interest in the selected state and an appreciation for hand written letters.
