The students at my school come from a variety of backgrounds. Roughly 49% of our students come from a Hispanic background and 60% of our total school population is in a position to receive free and reduced services for lunch. Our students come to school from a diverse variety of backgrounds ranging from two-parent families, single-parent families, broken families, and migrant families.
My students come in every day with a smile on their face and ready to learn.
But sometimes learning can be difficult for them depending on what their family structure is like, whether they were able to have dinner the night before, or breakfast that morning.
I enjoy getting to know and build relationships with my students. Gaining their trust and respect is important for them to learn. If they don't believe that I have their best interests at heart then I can't expect them to buy into what I want them to do. Therefore I work very hard to create a safe environment for them to be successful.
My Project
As a 5th grade teacher, I find one of the hardest things for my students to do is sit still. Sitting at a desk in a hard plastic chair all day is something I even have difficulty doing when I go to training, so how can I expect my students to do it? Flexible seating gives my students choices and allows them to be accountable for their learning by giving them options of where to sit in the classroom. My students love to be able to move; whether they need to get up from time to time, or they want to lean their chair or stool backward so they rock, they always need to move. Rocking in their chairs or on stools creates a safety concern if they were to tip over. They love the choices we have in our class now, but I still have some needs that I have not addressed.
I have several students who are diagnosed with ADD and ADHD.
Providing wobble seats for them will offer them the ability to rock, wobble, and twist to help increase their focus and concentration while providing safety and reducing the amount of disruptive behavior that can occur with the need to move.
I have noticed more positive engagement with my students and more in-depth collaboration when they can choose where and how they sit. There are less disruptive behaviors and more on-task productivity. The addition of wobble seats will be one more option to offer choices for learning.
