Help me give my students new games, like chess, Settlers of Catan, Mah Jong, cards, Trivial Pursuit, Jenga, and Dominos!

My Students

On a given day, my library hosts 125 students per period in a six-period day, not including before school, after school, and lunch. Teachers and students crowd the library, working on the computers, using the books, and completing projects.

My school is 51% ethnic minorities, including African Americans, Native Alaskans, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic/Latinos (ASD Ethnicity Report, 2013).

Approximately 27% of the students enrolled at my school take advantage of the free and reduced-price lunch option provided, just as they take advantage of the opportunity to check out the resources in the library.

My Project

Non-electronic games promote socialization and build problem-solving skills. I'd love to provide my students with access to a variety of chess boards (something the kids ask for in the library), as well as some non-traditional games, so as to get them off their phones and interacting more with each other.

Gotta Get Games will provide my students with games that they have requested, like Chess, Mah Jong, Settlers of Catan, checkers, and Jenga.

Bringing back traditional games pushes them to work on their interpersonal skills and hones their critical thinking skills. Chess, as well as some of the other games in this project, provides challenging mathematic practice and long term strategic planning, as well as something students truly need: stress relief. I'd love to see my students laughing with each other as they play games in the library, either before school, at lunch, or after school, or after a long bout of mandated testing.
