The first example they modeled was rough, but after having students view other groups' work almost every group was able to go back and improve their model. As we did additional examples, a greater percentage of students were able to produce reasonable initial models, and many groups were able to add more details and explanations. I had students with particularly well-done models describe to their classmates the extra features they had added. \r\n\r\nThe same students spent part of another class period brainstorming questions about changes that occur in frozen plant and animal tissues. Groups filled their whiteboards with questions over 8 minutes. As we shared each group's best question, we noticed that for most groups the best questions were written during the 2nd half of the brainstorming. \r\n\r\nIn AP Biology, students spent a couple of periods working on end-of-unit review posters in pairs or triples. We do these each unit. Each group gets a different topic and they summarize the topics in colorful diagrams and words. We hang these posters on the wall and come back to them as we need to be reminded of a topic during the next unit. Students cite the making of these posters as one of the most valuable and learning-intensive uses of class time. \r\n\r\nAnother day, AP students were working in randomly assigned \"study groups\" to review concepts that they were struggling with. Without any prompting, students pulled out the group whiteboards and started drawing diagrams or writing down key points. \r\n\r\nStudent use of whiteboards and posters for learning is an essential part of my classes, but it uses a surprising amount of consumable materials. I go through a lot of whiteboard markers with my large classes using them so often. Poster paper with stickies on the back is really easy for students to use, but at 10-20 poster per class period, that adds up. This project has made me not have to think twice about having students use these materials! And that adds up to student-centered learning.","fullyFundedDate":1756436779191,"projectUrl":"project/documenting-collaborative-scientific-thi/9640753/","projectTitle":"Documenting Collaborative Scientific Thinking With Markers & Posters","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Matell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4019779_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1477076225100","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4019779"},{"teacherId":4501836,"projectId":9868194,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for contributing to this project.
