My Students

Have you ever read a mystery and not been able to figure out what happened? Being in a book club with your peers is the missing piece to this puzzle! Doing so gives you the opportunity to put your heads together to find clues and piece the puzzle together to solve the mystery as a sleuthing team!

Over 65% of my eager third grade students are English language learners and immigrants who receive free or reduced lunch through our school district.

They are highly determined to learn and diligent workers, but find reading a challenge since English is not their primary language. Because of this unique challenge, I’ve been charged with the task of both increasing reading comprehension AND reading motivation. Since their reading levels range from first to third grade, I have requested several mystery books at various levels to meet their individual needs.

My Project

One way to accomplish this is by spending a unit of study on the genre of mystery. At this age, students love to figure out puzzling mysteries! In book clubs, social motivation to read, peer support, and oral language skills will be embedded in the process. With your support, all my students will have the opportunity to interact with one another as they read, think, and talk within their book clubs. They are held accountable to read so they can contribute to the literary conversations during club meetings; at the same time students feel at ease about sharing their thoughts orally with a small group of trusted peers. Students will make predictions, find clues, use critical thinking skills, and voice their opinions regarding the characters and the important elements in each case. They will surely be motivated to keep reading to find out who, what, when, where, and how the mystery is solved. Then each book club will look forward to its next mission: to read a new mystery book together!

Please make it possible for my students to realize what Walt Disney meant when he said, "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island.” I am anxious to set up mystery book clubs for my students, so they can experience the joy of reading, followed up by deep conversations that will lead them to reflect on what they have read with their peers.
