Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are really in need of some non-fiction novels to use for literature circles. Not only would these books be used in my classroom, but they would also be used in two other 5th grade classroom
I have 24 wonderful 5th graders in my room.
They are so anxious to learn and try so hard to do their best. We are more than half Hispanic in our school population and are 100% free lunch for all students because of the economic condition around our school. Our school does an amazing job getting things done with little to no resources.
My Project
These books would enable my students as well as the students in the other two 5th grade rooms to interact with others while reading because there would be multiple copies for them to use. I have seen my students grow together as a "family" and am so excited to see them share the things they learn in these books with each other. Books like Climbing Everest, Behind Rebel Lines - the Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds Civil War Spy, Babe Ruth, The Story of Harriet Tubman, and Stealing Home are just a few of the book I am trying to get into the hands of my students.
These books will enable my students to not only read, but also learn about our past and history.
There are so many things that they need to learn that many times Social Studies goes by the way side. By being able to use non-fiction books, most of which are biographies, they will be focusing on improving their reading skills as well as learn about the past. My hope is that one of these books will be the "hook" that will spark a curiosity in young minds to learn more.
