This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are African-American male students from the economically disadvantaged areas of Baltimore City. They are 9th-12th grade students who are competitive and energetic. They show enthusiasm in lab experiments and are very eager to learn. They engage very well with hands-on and exploration activities. They are inquisitive and determined in finding answers to their queries. They learn well when they see things rather than imagine things.
Remote learning has its disadvantage especially in science where students usually do experiments. Lab activities usually take the form of virtual simulations which is not as effective as actual physical lab experience. The fun and excitement of doing or at least seeing the actual experiment is denied from the students.
My school remains in virtual learning and students still have no access to the actual physical lab.
So while they cannot still do actual experiments, the GoPro cam and iMac will bring these exciting experiments right to their homes. With this equipment, I will be able to live-stream experiments and let them see real-time what's going on. I will be able to demonstrate more and complex computer-assisted experiments with a powerful computer at hand. They won't just see boring simulations but will see the wonders of science unfold before their eyes. It is my hope that this experience will excite them and make them love science more.
The project is the students' eye to the science lab. With this project, students will be able to make observations and measurements of physical and chemical quantities at their homes as I performed the experiments either in the lab at school or at home. Unlike recorded demonstration experiments which students make access online, in the activities with this project, students will have the opportunity to engage in real-time in interactive investigation with me and make decisions about the experiments. The expected outcomes of this project are that students will be able to develop their measurement and observation skills, and also plan and designs their own scientific investigations.
