Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the librarian of an urban public school that serves students grades PK-5, and two autism units. This is a neighborhood school that serves approximately 600 children. I work to instill a desire to read. I believe if I can get our students to learn to read for enjoyment that they will become lifelong learners.
Inspiring a love for reading will encourage empathy and caring in their treatment of others and help them become more well-rounded individuals.
Our students need to build social skills, gain knowledge, better their perspective and construct tools to be productive citizens. Our students need to increase their vocabulary and comprehension to be able to effectively communicate. Reading allows children to use their imagination, create a world view and look out through the eyes of others. It can change and improve their world by helping them manage their anger and make better choices so they become productive members of society.
My Project
My students need Goosebumps books by R. L. Stine. Our library needs more fiction books to update, extend and diversify our collection for advancing learning and literacy. Our current fiction collection is in crisis, it is way too small to serve our students reading needs. Goosebumps are the most requested fiction books from our students. I would like to provide them better access to what they want to read.
Having these books will not only enhance our library collection, it will create an excitement for reading and literature.
These additional materials will be made available for the almost 600 economically disadvantaged children our elementary school serves. The fiction section is a vital component of any library. Fiction serves as a gateway into reading, the drive to know what happens next and how it's all going to end. Reading increases vocabulary, creativity and confidence. My goal is to provide them with books that they enjoy, give them access to those books, and let them read them and discover reading is a pleasurable. experience.
