This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

These students have a love for learning driven by curiosity, which leads to exploration and discovery. To many of my students, traveling is a luxury. With Google Expeditions, cost isn't a factor. Students will partake in virtual reality tours all over the world without leaving their classroom.

We have been using Google Cardboard in my classroom for the past month. However, many students were frustrated when their cell phones didn't work with certain virtual reality apps. Some apps only work for Android, and many of my students have iPhones. By receiving 10 cell phones (of the same type) with wireless capability, students will have ample opportunities to explore. If this project receives funding, our school will have access to, the brand new, Google Expeditions program. Students become immersed in VR tours that take them all over the world as the teacher guides them on a tablet (as if they were actually there).

These students will develop technological skills as they immerse themselves in several virtual reality experiences. By having these phones, students will have the opportunity to create their own virtual reality experience, which they can share with the world. The most exciting aspect would be using Google Expeditions. This is a brand new program, which only a few schools across North America have access to. GE will give my students access to over 100 guided tours all over the world. There are several "Career Expeditions" where you tour several different careers. There are also virtual college tours, as well as tours to several historic landmarks all over the world.

In Their Own Words

Our first goal is to have enough devices so each lab table can share at least one Google Cardboard with a cell phone. Also, we want to better understand locations around the world by seeing them first hand instead of reading about them. Google Expeditions might inspire us to travel abroad or pursue a certain career. Who can say they virtually traveled the world without expenses? Being able to tour these various locations for free would be such an amazing gift that we would not receive otherwise.

In a field trip there has to be an adult chaperone, but with Google Expeditions, students can lead their own trips. If we lead our own virtual field trips, we can obtain a better understanding of what we being taught. If we're having kids become the teacher to teach other kids, they will be more comfortable taking the lead of their own learning.

We all come from various backgrounds, and many of us never get an opportunity to travel due to financial situations. At times, finding funding for more expensive field trips is very difficult. We find it is easier to understand what we are learning by physically being at the location. With this opportunity, we do not need to physically be at any of these locations thanks to virtual reality.
