My students need Chromebooks to ignite their curiosity and improve achievement.

My school is in an urban district with more than 10,000 students in 22 schools. There are 197 students. 96.4% are African-American, 3.1% are Hispanic and 0.4% are White. 37% of Grade 5 students are proficient in English/Language Arts and 30% are proficient or exceeded proficiency in Math. The median household income is $36,978. According to City-Data, 89.5% of residents are below the poverty line. According to a research, "Students in technology-enriched environments experience positive effects in achievements in all subject areas and...Students learn more in less time." Thus, with a deficiency in technology equipment, implementing instruction can be limited.
Two and sometimes three classes (average 16 students per class) have to share a cart of 25 laptops.
The goal is to have a paperless classroom while enhancing students' performance and building a supportive relationship with families and the community using Google Classroom.
“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” – David Warlick
During this 2017-2018 school year, students in grade five technology to student ratio is 2:1. Students have begun infusing Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education into daily instruction. Chromebooks enhance students' collaboration. School Technology Leaders, such as myself, are in the process of training classroom teachers in the usage of Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education.
Google Apps for Education are digital tools that engage students in learning and creating a hands-on learning environment.
Although I am training staff and introducing students to Google Apps for Education, implementation can benefit from providing Chromebooks at a 1:1 technology to student ratio.
Given a 1:1 ratio, teachers can completely infuse Google Classroom into their daily instruction. Teachers will be allowed to research and choose Google Apps for Education that will engage students while enhancing student achievement. This will be our first step towards becoming a "Future Ready School".
