Goodbye Reluctant Readers! Critical Reading with Novels in Verse

My Project

Students in my critical reading class are tasked with reading both independently and within small groups. They are encouraged to self-select novels that interest them and keep them engaged. My students will also study poetry in this course, and I would like for my students to be able to blend these two ideas together by giving them access to novels written in verse. Often, students are forced to read classic poetry that, while wonderful, seems irrelevant to students. They think of poetry as old, boring, and confusing. These students would benefit greatly from having access to current, relevant young adult novels that are written in verse. These novels would make poetry more current and relevant in the minds of my students while also presenting themes that are important and engaging for my students to discuss.

I believe these novels will be game-changers for my relunctant readers who struggle to find books that they can both connect with and feel successful reading.

These novels will be used both independently and in small reading groups of three to four students. These novels will enrich both experiences for my students and continue to encourage a love of reading that I strive to instill in my students every single day.
