Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a charter high school in the urban core of San Diego. We are located in the 9-story central library downtown. While many of our scholars come from the surrounding neighborhoods, many also come from all around the county for our unique school and high-quality education. In addition, being in the library allows for a unique partnership between our school and a community-based organization.

Our school's goal is to engage, educate, and empower but my students need to be able to work in an environment that is comfortable and conducive to learning.

69% of our scholars are Hispanic and 14% are African-American. Additionally, 14% are English Language Learners, and 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

I teach an advisory class that guides students throughout their 4 year high school journey. I have been with my current 12 graders for the past four years and now they are graduating in June.

My Project

After four years of working together, my seniors are leaving high school as a young adults. Throughout these years, my message to them centered on appreciating time and creating their own career paths of their choosing.

My final goodbye gift: antique time pieces to keep track of their precious time or compasses so that they never lose direction in their journeys moving forward.

These motivational gifts are symbolic and unique - just like these amazing seniors. The gifts will serve as a reminder of all the growth they have achieved.
