My high school collaborates with Special Olympics to promote social inclusion through sports. Unified Sports joins students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. This will be my third year as coach for Unified Track and Field. There are typically twelve to fifteen students that participate. Although the team is relatively small, each and every athlete takes pride in practicing for and participating in the various events. While it is hard work, it is a very rewarding endeavor.
My Project
As previously stated, the promotion of social inclusion is of upmost importance to Unified Sports. As the coach of Unified Track and Field, I am always on a mission to provide ongoing inclusionary activities for my athletes. Less than a year ago, I came up with the idea to create a coffee shop in my classroom. The menu is very simple and consists of bagels and iced coffee. Several of my athletes assist me with this operation. I feel that it is now time to expand our coffee shop into the Cougar Coffee Café.
Not only will the Cougar Coffee Café promote social inclusion, but it will also allow the athletes to learn the soft skills needed for future employment.
They will learn about communication, organization, teamwork, punctuality and critical thinking skills. They will also learn how to handle money and run a cash register.
The materials will allow us to start to expand the Cougar Coffee Café. The Keurig will enable us to offer warm beverages instead of just cold. Additionally, the ice machine will make it feasible to access ice in a safe manner.
