Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students in Guitar Class have not been exposed to music in the way that traditional band and orchestra students have been since elementary school.
In a lower socioeconomic urban community, these students will get the chance to express themselves musically and grow as individuals and as a group.
While they may not have been lucky enough to have private lessons or formal instruction from an early age, they now have the opportunity to make music with other kids like them in a meaningful and fun setting.
My Project
Every student deserves music education, and guitar is one of the cheapest and most practical instruments to learn. While our guitar program is growing and gaining very high interest, the instruments are on the decline. When I started, there weren't enough to go around, and while we take very good care of what we have, we simply do not have enough to go around. We have received ten guitars, which have really helped! Our Theatre department students even built us a mini Guitar Center-esque storage room with hooks up on the walls and everything. Now all we need are the guitars!
We really believe that every student deserves music education, and the fact is that most students are not traditional choir, band, and orchestra students.
The guitar is an instrument that can speak to the majority of our school population, and not just a few.
