My fourth graders are hard-working, bright, and eager to please, but many come out of third grade with a diminished love for reading (thank you state assessments). I want to bring the JOY of reading back to them by offering hundreds of good books for them to choose from.
We have had a stellar year exploring the books I currently have in the library, but they haven't had new choices in awhile.
Students have accepted the 30 BOOK CHALLENGE, enjoyed keeping track of books read via book celebrations and a visual book stack, competed with other classrooms to read the most, explored new genres with our Reading Olympics, and gotten VERY excited with our Book Raffles when they are chosen to be the first person to read a new book.
We need to keep the momentum going by offering a variety of books they will get excited about as we wrap up the school year. I also want them to head into summer with a long list of books that they want to read but just didn't get to--the perfect Summer Reading Bucket List!
My Project
My students have submitted lists of interests, hobbies, and book genres/authors they are interested in. I have purchased several titles this year, but need even more to meet the reading interests of 52 diverse readers. When celebrating books each week, students summarize and rate their books, but only one person can borrow the book next. Students needs additional quality, high-interest books that they have requested by name to finish the year strong!
Ending the year with a renewed excitement about books will help students continue to grow their love of reading.
This will encourage them to keep reading during the summer and start fifth grade ready to go, rather than losing the habits we have spent all year acquiring.
