This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We're no fools! (But the gold is!) Prospecting for pyrite in the modern Gold Rush.

My students are fantastic young ladies and gentlemen who possess great curiosity and appreciation in learning about our world.

My school is comprised of an extremely impoverished population, with many students having very little experiences with life outside their neighborhoods. Their zest for learning is limited by resources not available to them, but when opportunities arise, they are so very appreciative.

My Project

My proposal is to have a Gold Rush Day for fourth grade, incorporating both social studies and science standards. Students will wear 1849 period clothing while rotating through 8 stations, guided by parents. Stations will include eating "chow", panning for gold, weighing their claim, comparing panning techniques and environmental impact, selling supplies, entrepreneurial endeavors, purchasing supplies with claim money, and playing a vocabulary game using words from the time.

This project will make the Gold Rush period of state history real to students because they will become participants in the period dress, language, food, and culture of the time.

Students will also get the advantage of observing what the environmental effects of panning has on our environment, which, at the time, was not considered. Students will live the history and own the learning.
