Going Wild with Life Cycles: Research, Write and Share

Help me give my students experiences in research and presenting with high interest animal series books, writing and art materials for students to make their own books and opportunities to present in a super cool share chair/space.

My Students

Our school philosophy embraces arts integration, enriched assessments and student voice and choice in the learning cycle for our curious students. We want students to have opportunities to share their work and receive feedback. As teachers, we work hard to balance authentic formative and traditional assessments with a wide lens on data about the whole child for all decisions we make. I take pride in integrating curriculum using Guided Inquiry, infusing the arts and serving the whole learner through rich literacy experiences While CoVid has put a damper on some of our outings, it is even more important that we have the materials and comforts in our rooms to accommodate our students' needs and to bring the outside world in.

Our third graders are curious, engaged and energetic learners who come from socially diverse backgrounds-about half of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

We have 10% of our third graders learning English as a second language. School wide, about 30% of our students are on a transfer due to either special education needs available at our school through our Autism/special education department or for learning style related needs and parent request.

My Project

Students are inspired by the Who Would Win and Animal Parts books-both highly engaging reading series that incorporate research skills in a fun format. After using these books (and encyclopedia resources) to learn more about animals, students will choose their own animals to write about in their very own book creation based on the style of one of these two series. The items in this grant will give us all the tools necessary for a full circle learning experience with the recursive reading and writing standards in our curriculum.

These high interest books along with colored pencils, and special pens will add flair to the research/writing project and help provide students with the inspiration they need to create quality projects to share in our new Writer's Circle space, complete with stools, share chair and a rug to help us define our spot in the world as accomplished writers.

These books will be shared digitally with families and they will be available for our younger book buddies to check out as well. Having a space for students to share, receive feedback and edit will create excitement and engagement for many more high quality and engaging writing projects to come! Most of the materials will be used for many years and many more creative collaborative reading/writing experiences across the curriculum.
