My Students

I am the media specialist in a rural school of struggling readers. Student interest and engagement will increase with the e-readers. We need new titles to increase motivation and the cost of purchasing eBooks is much less than library-bound books. As I see it, the Kindle is the perfect solution!

Our students are eager to learn and excited about the future.

They currently live in poverty, with approximately 90% of our students receiving free/reduced lunch prices. We are a Title 1 school working to inspire our students to be college and career ready and globally competitive in the 21st century. We are a small school with less than 300 students in prekindergarten through 5th grade, but we make a mighty roar when we accomplish what is seemingly unattainable. My students deserve the best, and they deserve these Kindles.

My Project

Our Battle of the Books team will use these e-readers to have access to all 18 books on the current list from NCSLMA. I can download the books on multiple Kindles, so all students can read them at the same time, unlike my one copy in the media center. The print can be changed to best meet their needs, as I have a students with visual impairments and could greatly benefit from the larger text. These books rotate throughout the years, so digital copies will prove to be much more efficient for our budget. Students will be shown how to use the "go-to" feature on Kindles to cite text when answering Battle of the Books questions, and have access to the digital dictionaries for words they are unfamiliar with. This will help their vocabulary expand. The more the students read, the better readers they will be.

There is no way to describe how this project will impact my students.

Having an e-reader of their very own to use throughout the school year will bring excitement and enthusiasm about reading! It will teach the students responsibility and encourage good decisions. For those students with visual impairments, it will give them freedom and confidence. This will open doors for my students by showing them that anything is possible, if you just put yourself out there and work for it.
