Students with learning disabilities often struggle in the area of reading. One way to help these students is to provide them with the skills and resources necessary to help them read on grade level. Books with multiple interest and reading levels will help students work towards this goal. The books will be a resource for all L.D. students as they receive additional support in the learning lab.
Have you ever tried to help students understand the emotion or characteristics of a main character in a book, but students are unable to read through the first few lines? In this project students will read a book at their own individual reading level and also be able to understand what they have read by answering common who/what questions. Lower level readers will find success and accomplishment as they read stories that interest them and that they can read independently.
Books selected for this project represent books that meet the needs of the specific students currently receiving LD support. Books are available for students in the learning lab, but the books currently available represent different interests or they are too easy or hard for the students currently enrolled in the program.
Enabling students to read on grade level at the elementary level will empower students to become independent individuals who will be prepared for the workforce as qualified, contributing citizens.
