I have the wonderful opportunity to teach chemistry to students in grades 10-12. This is truly the first science where students are not asked to memorize definitions or place names on a diagram. Instead they are asked to experience science and understand it by doing it. In the school I teach, we do not limit who takes chemistry, as we feel all should take it. We challenge everyone to take a chance; no matter the type of student you are. As most of you are aware, chemistry usually appeals to those only "good" in science; we are changing that by making sure all students realize they can be "good" in anything, they just need to try.

It is becoming increasing more important to perform labs that are above and beyond the standard “elementary” labs which Mom and Dad can perform in their kitchens. I feel that we need to do what is necessary to increase the lab equipment and capabilities that we currently have at our disposal.

With the Vernier software we will have the ability to record real time temperature data which will allow for actual phase diagram development and analysis, heat analysis, endothermic/exothermic curve development and analysis as well as a complete understanding of temperature vs. heat/energy; currently these topics are only discussed as “normal” thermometers make it very difficult to perform labs and produce actual/respectable data. Students see data and pictures from a textbook and do not get the opportunity to participate in a hands-on activity to incorporate the teachings. These are topics and objectives which are listed on the Chemistry and Physical Science standard course of studies. It is also an area that will aid our AP Environmental Science students as they attempt to be successful on the AP exam. The data gathered from the labs used with this software could also be shared with our Algebra 1 and 2.

Any area where we can attempt to increase an interest in science and perhaps gauge further interest at that next level is an area we need to pursue. The first step to that is increasing the lab equipment we have in high school science classrooms.
