My students need five iPad minis with cases and 10 sets of headphones to improve beginning literacy skills, phonemic awareness and to inspire a joy of reading.
Each day in our Kindergarten begins with a song or a poem related to our weekly theme. We start our days with "good mornings" and happy smiles, which gives the kids a positive start to the lessons of the day. I strive to have each student foster a love of reading and learning even outside of school!
My school is a Title I (high poverty) school with 97% of students on free or reduced lunch.
The kindergartners in my school are creative, motivated and love to learn. When my students come in the morning they want to go to the classroom library or want to go on the computer. Many of the children do not have books or computers at home and can't wait to come to school and get cozy with a great story.
My Project
The iPads will be shared amongst our kindergarten classes so all our young learners will reap the countless benefits of the of using the iPad in the classroom. The iPad offers several read aloud stories for the students to follow along with and will help students with comprehension and fluency, in a fun interactive way. There are several apps that work on specific emergent literacy skills that can be used based on the needs of the students. As the teacher, I can use the iPads in small group instruction for students to be more interactive learners.
Each of students will have their own folder so that I can personalize their learning based on their needs as learner.
The students will be able to work at their own pace and develop a sense of independence. Most importantly, they will have the opportunity to choose books to read and they can listen to the story as many times as they want. Listening to beloved stories is how are young students become readers and writers in the future.
