Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My high school science class is a very busy place - students are encouraged to work together, try, possibly fail, and then try again! The atmosphere is very supportive and I act as their facilitator. The classes are very hands-on; emphasis is given to deciphering text and writing to prompts.
My students are exceptionally nice and bright, but most are from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Approximately 80% of my students are of Hispanic ethnicity, the remaining 20% are mostly of Asian ethnicity; 85% of my students qualify for free lunch. In class, I try to keep them motivated and interested; I accomplish this by keeping topics fresh, incorporating lots of lab activities to represent key concepts, and keeping the curriculum student-focused.
Our school atmosphere is very supportive and encourages students to fulfill requirements that would allow them to go to college. For most of our students, they would be the first in their family to go to college. Our school accomplishes this by not only educating the students in regards to college requirements, but by making all classes open access. This Advanced Placement class allows students to experience the rigor of college with the support of a high school teacher - me!
My Project
The Cracking the AP Environmental Science Exam review books will be in the classroom for the first semester, but then assigned to an individual student for the second semester to prepare for the AP test in May. Each topic that we address in class is reviewed in this book; additionally, this book provides two full-length practice exams. The student must score at least a 3 out of 5 in order to receive college credit; this review book will help them do that! Topic reviews will be assigned, as we cover them. Practice quizzes are included within the text, and can be used in the classroom. In general, my students would not be able to afford this preparatory book, but students from wealthier families would - putting my students at a disadvantage from their peers. The full-length practice exams would be used on the two Saturdays prior to the actual AP test date; I would administer these tests myself and then review their results with them in class. Additionally, this book includes study skills, which could be applied to all of their classes!
