Students at my school come from a wide variety of racial and cultural backgrounds. We use that diversity to build a school climate in which students are celebrated for who they are and the different life experiences they bring to our school every day. Through a program called Capturing Kids' Hearts, strong character is both highly valued and taught every day.
Many of our 6th-8th grade students live with relatives, have to take care of younger siblings, and/or experience high levels of transience that can interfere with their education.
Over 70% of our students come from low social-economic backgrounds. Students at my school want to learn and be successful in life, but for some, obstacles have been put in their way that they are working to overcome.
I love my school and the diversity of the student body. I witness smiling faces and acts of kindness every day. The students at my school deserve the opportunity to learn, dream, be successful, and have their social emotional needs met. Many of our students see the school building and the community within our walls as their safe spaces.
My Project
Our students come to school to be equipped as life long learners but what we have seen throughout the years is that when social and emotional needs are not met, they are unable to fully thrive in their academics. 70% of students at Greer Middle School receive free or reduced lunch. While resiliency has become a learned skill, these students often lack the education and resources of how to best take care of themselves as growing adolescents.
The Caring Closet at Greer Middle School will provide a safe and confidential space of essential items for our students such as personal hygiene items, new undergarments, and wash cloths.
All students will have the opportunity to access it. Our hope is that the closet will continue to grow in the years ahead and stay stocked with items our students need.
