My Students
Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
My students come from all over the world, and they speak many languages. In my school, we teach students English and Spanish with the hope of having all children exit the program bilingual and bi-literate. As you can imagine, this is an incredibly challenging task, especially when you lack the necessary resources to support this kind of development.
Because my students are learning how to read, write, listen, and speak, it is so important that they have access to resources that help bridge these two languages.
I am requesting several items for use in my classroom. We need a world globe to understand geography and make cultural connections, visual dictionaries to connect language with images, Spanish to English dictionaries to bridge both languages and look for cognates, encyclopedias about topics like American history to fill in knowledge gaps faced by immigrant students, and thesauri to help students develop academic vocabulary.
All of these items will be used throughout the day and during all academic blocks. We can use the dictionaries and thesauri during when we are writing and our globe and encyclopedias when we are learning about Social Studies. My students will benefit tremendously from these supports. Please consider supporting us!
