Global Studies Classroom Library

My students need 45 novels to read for book clubs.

I am writing to request 5 copies each of 9 contemporary novels written by immigrant and African-American writers. My 11th grade Humanities class focuses on the question: What does it mean to be civilized? We answer this questions by studying civilizations around the world. Many of my students and their families have come to Boston from other countries and are therefore very interested in global studies. Throughout the year, we read Hamlet, A Tale of Two Cities, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Things Fall Apart. We learn history through literature as well as our World History textbook and primary sources. The students complete 8 writing pieces during their junior year to show expertise of these books and their studies. The Global Studies books that I am requesting will supplement the whole-class text reading that we do. I have selected books that students will enjoy for their universal themes such as moving to America; leaving family and friends for better opportunities; learning a new language; and seeking and finding community in America. These books will help us make connections between historical and contemporary human experiences. The novels will challenge my students with new vocabulary words and important themes and will capture their interest. Most importantly, my students will be able to read a variety of books and understand the books by having meaningful discussions with their peers in book clubs. I am very excited to offer my student these excellent books which will expand their horizons and improve their reading fluency. Thank you very much for your consideration of this proposal.
