Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are full of heart and hope. Most are ethnically diverse, inner-city students who travel long and far to get a quality education.

70% of students are bussed to my school and travel long and far to get a quality education.

I want to do the best I can and inspire them with content that makes them want to take action on the issue of education and discover their role in the world. I want them to see how learning about the world around them can be an empowering tool to build both literacy and actionable solutions.

My Project

Students will use the Upfront New York Times Magazine to build literacy and knowledge of the world around them. They will come to realize how their lives are connected to the outside world and that they can have a voice in what happens in this world. In our unit "Decision Making in the Global World" students will study events around the world in which individuals made difficult decisions to take action to support a cause they believe in. This includes watching "He Named Me Malala" (withMalala) and learning about adversity students face in getting an education. This unit will not only build their awareness of the world they live in, but also inspire them to take action. They will also read Susan Cain's book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" so that they can build advocacy skills. By learning about the world and their role in it, I hope to inspire them with skills and knowledge to take action in their communities and the world around them.

I want to inspire students to shape their destinies and futures.

I hope you will consider supporting this project and helping build global literacy and a desire to learn about the world in my students. Thank you!
