My Students

Our sixth grade students are challenge seekers who have ignited their passion for learning. My students are inquisitive about the world around them. I work in a Title I school where 45% fall in the low socio-economic range and 33% are Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander, and Asian. With diverse backgrounds and perspectives, each student has a voice and a unique perspective in our classroom community.

My Project

We do not have a music program at our Title I school. However, we would like to provide the students an opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. Playing an instrument requires determination, perseverance, and develops a sense of community when they play together. Our school currently has a set of 19 working ukuleles. We need a few more ukuleles for a class set and some strings to repair a few of our other ukuleles.

Parents might be brought to tears watching their student play.

In the past, we have had student-led conferences where students play and sing for their parents. Many parents are amazed and wiped away tears of joy at how well the student was able to pick up the instrument. We need tuners to help students learn how to tune their instrument as well as practice when they are at home.
