"For people without disabilities, technology makes things easier. For people with disabilities, technology makes things possible."
My students are some of the most incredible people I have ever known.
They overcome challenges daily and without fail, manage to put smiles on each person's face they interact with. They show compassion, patience, and kindness to everyone, and inspire others to do the same. Each day, they approach with grace and humor, tackling each obstacle that comes their way. My students genuinely desire to learn and grow, when others may choose to complain or become complacent. We are in a small, close-knit, rural community with a rich history, that faces challenges of poverty on every level from our schools to our homes. This limits the opportunities and resources that are available to students, hindering their growth and limiting their potential.
Students in my class will use the augmentative communication device in all aspects of the classroom, from daily living skills to core subjects like reading and math. For example, in a reading activity, a student will be able to respond to questions by hitting one of the two answer choices on the 2 button augmentative communication device. Another student using the device will be able to begin and end activities on their own by using the adaptive switch, allowing him to listen to stories as he initiates them, giving him more independence. Here are some additional benefits to these devices in my classroom: -allow access to general curriculum -gives students opportunity to express wants and needs -gives students a voice -allows students more independence -students are able to initiate learning -gives students choices -allows students to participate in activities with peers -exhibit comprehension in reading activities -respond to questions -provide reinforcement for participating.
This adaptive switch and augmentative communication device will help my students who are nonverbal to interact with their peers and communicate their wants and needs.
They can exhibit their knowledge in academic areas, giving them confidence and allowing others to see their unique strengths and abilities.
