This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class of twenty-two students includes sixteen boys and six girls who have the wiggles and need seating other than the traditional chair at a desk.

My students come from a community that is filled with crime and extreme poverty.

My student come to me worried about where they are going to live and how they are going to get to school on a daily basis.

My students consist mostly of Hispanic students as our student body is approximately 98% Hispanic. My students want to learn, and I want to provide them the atmosphere to foster that learning.

My Project

My students want to learn but sometimes the wiggles get in the way. Sitting for several hours a day in a hard plastic chair is not conducive to learning. The kids are always moving and trying to find that sweet spot for learning, which is why I want to offer a choice in my class. It is developmental appropriate for the students to lay on a pillow and use a clipboard to do their classwork and this project will allow me to give my students many choice on where they learn, that might mean sitting on a carpet, in a bean bag, or at a low table with a soft chair. The most important thing is that my students are engaged in learning and I have found if they have that sweet spot, that spot where they feel the most comfortable, they will stay more engaged. Compare that to tables where they are constantly moving and fidgeting to find a comfortable spot when they should be engaged in learning.
