Giving Our Voice to Arkansas Teen Book Award Level 1
Help me give my students the opportunity to read the books selected for the Arkansas Teen Book Award Level 1 so that they might have a voice in voting for the winner.
We are a culturally diverse, rural eighth through twelfth grade high school. Our school has embraced the concept of a flex-mod schedule. Students can fit anywhere from six to eight classes into their schedule allowing more time for AP classes, college-credit classes, electives and CTE (career and technical education) courses. Students are given at least four hours personal learning time (PLT) throughout the week which they can use as they choose to complete homework, work in groups with their peers or meet with teachers during "office hours."
We have high expectations for our students meaning we want them to leave high school fully prepared for whatever they have chosen, whether it be college, vocational or straight into a career field.
Our Core Beliefs and Mission statement for our school is “My Plan My Future”.
My Project
Each year Arkansas high school students are invited to read a selected group of young adult literature and vote on the yearly Arkansas Teen Book Award. Students are given from September to the following August to read 5 books. There are two levels for the award - grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. Books chosen for this years list must be the first if in a series and have been published in hardback in 2017 or 2018. The Arkansas Teen Book Award began in 2009 in an effort to increase readership and acknowledge young adult literature. Each year, dozens of volunteer readers work with teens across the state to read nominated titles to create a manageable reading list.
Please help me provide the books on this years voting list so my students might have the opportunity to vote for the 2019 Arkansas Teen Book Award Level 1 winner.
As we are an 8-12 grade high school building, the books I have selected are from levels 1 of the award and are highly regarded and reviewed young adult literature. The books selected for level 1 are Solo by Kwame Alexander, The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron, Refugee by Alan Gratz, When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon and Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. Please help me place these books into my students hands so they might be able to have a hand in making the Level 1 Arkansas Teen Book Award what it is!
