I teach in a school that is more like a family. We have some of the best teachers in the state. I am lucky to be in a school that is surrounded by happiness and joy. I teach a variety of first graders who come from a diverse sent of socioeconomic backgrounds, along with many who are on free or reduced lunch. My students are in need of materials to help them actively engage in math and reading each day. My kids come from high poverty homes, where most of them are only exposed to educational materials/books when they enter my classroom.
I try to provide them with a print-rich environment that is inviting and interesting.
I understand that I might be the only smile or only hug they may get that day.
I wake up every day ready to see whose light bulb will turn on. I wake up every day ready to impact their lives so, in turn, they will change the world. My kids inspire me every day. I teach first-grade students in an urban school district. Families are not able to provide their kids with the proper materials to be successful in school.
My Project
It’s amazing how my students come alive when I sit back, close my mouth, and let them talk. Asking them open ended questions such as how and why challenges them to prove their mastery and requires strong communication skills.
Being able to discuss and defend one’s learning is a powerful tool.
Unfortunately, Not every child is comfortable speaking in front of his/her classmates or have the skill set to do so. I want to provide a safe space for them to express themselves and begin to develop strong communication skills.
With headphones and personal microphones, my kids will be able to record themselves on their Chromebooks. They will be able to discuss and defend their learning without worrying about being in front of others or being nervous.
I’m hoping that eventually, my kids will begin to feel confident by recording themselves and reviewing it and then be able to speak in front of the class. This is such an important skill they will need for the rest of their lives!
