My school is over 80% free and reduced lunch and my students come from low income families. Most of my students have just a few books at home and have to rely on the books in my classroom to help them become better readers. Many students come from broken homes and are shuffled between parents, some living with grandparents. All of my first graders come to school looking forward to our Read to Self time of day - even beating out lunch and recess! :) We have daily Red to Self which is a time for the children to get comfy on a pillow or scoop rocker, snuggle up with a good book, and read! I tend to play soft music and dim the lights. This time is a time for students to read for enjoyment, not because someone is making them!
