Hello!
I teach young leaders and dreamers; girls trying to change the world!
I teach in a public charter school in Baltimore City, Maryland. While many of these young girls deal with so many outside influences that constantly consume those around them, these girls enter school each day with the mindset to make a difference. In English I, my students or "snowflakes" as I like to call them, use literature to analyze human nature. As these students are overcoming challenges, many of them do not have the opportunity to interact with technology or receive access to current events and the ever changing world around us.
These young girls journey from all over Baltimore City, most enter the classroom with similar stories; however, each day we work to move forward and change our future for the better. We work to be educated in all walks of life and to be socially conscious.
At a public all-girls’ charter school in Baltimore City, students are overcoming daily challenges; however, they are still searching for the power in their own voice. Having laptops, cameras, and a printer will allow students to start a journalism club with a school newspaper. This will allow students to explore what is taking in place in their city and the world around them while reporting to their community and encouraging all to be informed citizens. As an English teacher who strives to mold young women into 21st century thinkers and learners, giving girls the opportunity to become journalists fosters critical thinking and global citizenship.
