Giving All Students the Opportunity to Participate in Band
Help me give my students the opporunity to learn how to play a band instrument. We lend instruments out to students in grades 5-8 who want to learn how to play, and we often don't have enough instruments.
There are many students in Portland that would like to learn how to play a musical instrument and join their school band. We have run out of instruments and have not been able to provide all students in grades 5 though 8 the opportunity to begin an instrument. In some cases, students have had to flee their countries without anything, are already able to play an instrument, and would like to continue playing in Portland. We often do not have enough to provide to these students, so I am requesting an additional flute and two trumpets.
I love what I teach and feel fortunate to be able to teach what I am passionate about.
Playing an instrument not only teaches students to learn another language or be part of a team, but learning an instrument is a lifelong skill. Learning an instrument provides students with social skills and playing an instrument ties into becoming better students in English as well as math.
Students who are in Portland, Maine deserve the same opportunity as those in any other school district, the ability to learn how to play an instrument.
