This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know how many science standards 5th graders are expected to learn? Without multiple opportunities to explore these new concepts the standards go in one ear and out the other! My students will remember the new concepts when they read about them in books and play fun games!

I teach a bi-literate group of 5th graders in a dual language school.

They are eagerly learning to read and write in both Spanish and English. I teach science in English and need to give my students multiple opportunities to explore all new concepts, because they are learning a new language as well as new concepts and skills. I need to give them different ways to learn; visual, hands-on, kinesthetic, and social.

My Project

My students will be so excited to go to reading group and expect to be working on reading skills and read a book about a new science concept. As they read a book about matter and read how water changes from liquid to gas they will be able to connect the book to the science experiment we did the day before in science class. These connections make reading meaningful to my 5th graders and help them learn the science concepts in a way that makes it stick.

My students are used to having the basics that our district and school are able to provide.

As their teacher I know that they will learn more completely with multiple opportunities to explore the new concepts and skills that we expect our 5th graders to learn, to be successful in our school, college and in all the careers that our country needs them to fill.
