My students need 4 Amazon Fire Tablets and an iPad in order to build their literacy skills, and fall in love with reading.

My students are creative, technologically savvy, and full of questions about the world around them! They love hands-on activities, group work, and the ability to utilize technology in the classroom.
Many students lack resources and technology that allow them to reach their full potential.
We are a medical magnet school and students come from all over the county to get the best education possible. A high percentage of our students are economically disadvantaged and face many challenges at home that can interfere with their schooling. However, they are eager to learn and are always seeking ways to improve! They are fearless when it comes to technology, and jump with joy at the chance to use devices to read during the school day. As children of the 21st Century, they need to be prepared to use a variety of tools to engage in their world.
The Amazon Fire 7s and Apple iPad that I am hoping to add to my classroom will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom I strive to create. My students will be able to utilize the Kindle feature on the tablets during guided reading groups, as well as during independent, sustained reading time. They will be able to use the tablets and iPads to do research projects, book studies, and build basic English skills using various applications.
With the added technology, students will be able to access thousands of books that will allow them to read independently at their own reading level.
Students will also be able to choose books that interest them. Since many of my students are struggling readers, it is essential that they are reading as much as possible in order to get on level. I teach students of varying abilities, cultures, and home languages - from Gifted, to ESE, to English Language Learners. This technology allows students to choose texts that challenge them, and push them to become better students. When I brought my personal technology into the classroom, my students were begging to be able to use it to read! It was the greatest thing I experienced all year! Students were noticeably more engaged when given the opportunity to use technology throughout the school day. The technology will give them access to an incredible amount of new opportunities (not to mention thousands of books and applications). From learning how to better collaborate with classmates, to giving them the chance to choose books that are "just right" for them, it gives the kids more control over their learning. This project will help so many young scholars continue to grow and instill a love of reading that will carry on with them for the rest of their lives!
