The Amazon Fire 7s and Apple iPad that I am hoping to add to my classroom will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom I strive to create. My students will be able to utilize the Kindle feature on the tablets during guided reading groups, as well as during independent, sustained reading time. They will be able to use the tablets and iPads to do research projects, book studies, and build basic English skills using various applications. With the added technology, students will be able to access thousands of books that will allow them to read independently at their own reading level. Students will also be able to choose books that interest them. Since many of my students are struggling readers, it is essential that they are reading as much as possible in order to get on level. I teach students of varying abilities, cultures, and home languages - from Gifted, to ESE, to English Language Learners. This technology allows students to choose texts that challenge them, and push them to become better students. When I brought my personal technology into the classroom, my students were begging to be able to use it to read! It was the greatest thing I experienced all year! Students were noticeably more engaged when given the opportunity to use technology throughout the school day. The technology will give them access to an incredible amount of new opportunities (not to mention thousands of books and applications). From learning how to better collaborate with classmates, to giving them the chance to choose books that are "just right" for them, it gives the kids more control over their learning. This project will help so many young scholars continue to grow and instill a love of reading that will carry on with them for the rest of their lives!
