My Students

My 3rd grade ELL (English Language Learner) class is located in Long Island City, Queens. A truly international class in one of the most diverse places on Earth, my 8-year-old students are from culturally rich countries including Bangladesh, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Greece, Mexico, Panama, and Spain. Many students are recently arrived immigrants in the United States. They are dedicated to learning the English language, and happy to make new friends and become accustomed to a new way of life in America.

My Project

Our class needs some new books! For our next reading unit, students will be digging deeper into character studies. They will also be working as a book club to grow ideas about characters' motivations based on what they think, say, and do. This work will help them become stronger readers, as in 3rd grade something HUGE happens, instead of students learning to read, they should be at the reading level in which they are reading to LEARN.

While we have books in our class library, we are lacking multiple copies of books for student to truly experience what it's like to be in a working book club.
